This legacy is dedicated to two very special rescue horses, Jasper-Jones and Picasso-Jones.

Jasper's Story Begins Here...

In the autumn of 2019, a three-year-old bedraggled, mistreated, head-shy, confused and somewhat inquisitive little chestnut horse from the Western Cape was rescued by Have a Heart Horse Sanctuary. He had ostensibly been bush raced. He arrived in a trailer with other rescues at his temporary safe home. His rehabilitation started.

We were fortunate to have our home and stoep overlook the paddock where, some months later, Jasper spent most of his days grazing and playing with the other horses. With just a small fence separating us from the meadow, we were able to interact with him every day. By 2020 Jasper's trust and confidence had grown, and we had formed a beautiful bond. We simply fell in love with him.

We learnt so much from this little chap. How to be present in the moment, without our minds constantly rushing. To be quiet, to listen, and to let go. We loved our long walks together along the farm trails with our dogs, friends and other horses. As we trained him in hand, encounters with tall grass, bushes, baboons, cyclists, playful dogs and children gradually replaced fear with confidence. He stopped spooking at every shadow and branch blowing in the wind. What a privilege it has been to simply sit in God's creation while he quietly grazes beside us.

In 2021 we formally adopted Jasper from Have a Heart Horse Sanctuary. He became an irreplaceable part of our family and our daily lives.

Then, in 2024, another little horse found his way into our hearts. Picasso-Jones came to us as a rescue with a back injury, severe sweet itch affecting his mane and tail, and a great deal of anxiety. While we cannot share the details of his past, it was clear that he needed patience, understanding and a safe place to heal. Watching his confidence slowly grow has reminded us once again that love, kindness and time can transform a life. Today, Picasso-Jones stands alongside Jasper as a cherished member of our family, and together they continue to inspire everything that Love Heart Equine represents.

Why Love Heart Equine? ... Our Mission

Love Heart Equine was born as Jasper's legacy. Today, it is equally inspired by Picasso-Jones and by every horse still waiting for a second chance.

Our mission is to creatively raise funds to support our own rescue horses while making a positive contribution towards the people, charities and organisations that care for local horses and animals that have been abused, neglected, abandoned or simply need a place of refuge and ongoing care. Above all, our hope is that every animal is given unconditional love and the opportunity for a healthy, happy future.

We know there are hundreds of horses and other animals that suffer. We pray often for those without a voice and continually ask ourselves, "What can we do?"

Our journey began with small beginnings through art commissions. Together with the incredible support of our family and friends, these commissions help provide for the stabling, rehabilitation and wellbeing of Jasper and Picasso-Jones. But our vision has always extended beyond our own horses.

Since Covid, we have become increasingly aware of many much-loved horses that have had to be euthanised because their owners simply could no longer afford to care for them. Others have been sent away to grazing farms where, through no fault of their own, they have faced harsh conditions with little support.

Our desire is to help wherever possible by assisting with feed, veterinary expenses, temporary or long-term stabling, safe transport, rehabilitation and, where appropriate, rehoming through trusted rescue organisations and experienced professionals.

Our greatest hope is always that owners are able to keep and care for the horses they love with the support they need. Where rescue and rehoming become necessary, we work alongside local authorities, rescue centres and established charities to ensure the best possible outcome for each horse.

Many organisations already do remarkable work. Through Jasper's and Picasso-Jones' legacy, Love Heart Equine seeks to support these charities financially so that, together, we can make a difference—one horse at a time.

Our Vision for the Future

Love Heart Equine is more than a rescue initiative—it is a growing vision founded on faith, compassion and the belief that every life has value.

As God provides and the necessary funding becomes available, our long-term vision is to establish the Love Heart Equine Sanctuary.  A place of healing, refuge, restoration and hope for both animals and people.

Phase One – Love Heart Equine Sanctuary

Our first goal is to acquire a suitable smallholding where we can develop a sanctuary dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation and lifelong care of horses and hopefully other animals in need. It will be a peaceful place where neglected, abused or vulnerable animals can experience safety, healing and unconditional love. A place where people can come and sit quietly and reflect on the presence of God and enjoy the quietness of our horses.

The sanctuary will also enable us to expand our financial support to local rescue organisations and provide practical assistance through rehabilitation, temporary or permanent care, emergency transport and educational outreach.

Phase Two – Skills Development & Training Centre

Building on the sanctuary, our vision is to establish a Skills Development & Training Centre that equips people with practical, life-giving skills while fostering a culture of stewardship and compassion.

Training programmes will include animal care and welfare, sustainable farming practices, equine management, practical rural skills and other hands-on opportunities that empower individuals to make a lasting difference in their communities. We also hope to offer practical ministry training that encourages servant leadership, personal growth and caring for God's creation.

Our desire is not simply to rescue animals, but to equip people with the knowledge, skills and values needed to care well for them and to create sustainable opportunities that bring hope for generations to come.

We recognise that every great vision begins with small steps. Love Heart Equine started with two rescue horses, Jasper-Jones and Picasso-Jones. We trust that, in God's perfect timing, those small beginnings will continue to grow into a place where lives—both human and animal—are restored, one act of kindness at a time.

Right now – “Dreaming big and starting small”, but most of all we Started. Inspired by our first LoveHeart, Jasper-Jones and the dream of his legacy to follow.

We believe that God would not have given us this dream if He had not already given us everything we need to fulfil it. It sure is an exciting leap of Faith.
